Resignation and appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Naples, Italy

The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Naples, Italy, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Domenico Battaglia of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant’Agata de’ Goti as metropolitan archbishop of Naples, Italy.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Domenico Battaglia was born on 20 January 1963 in Satriano, province of Catanzaro and archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the Saint Pius X Seminary of Catanzaro.

Ordained a priest on 6 February 1988, he has since served as rector of the Archiepiscopal Seminary of Catanzaro and member of the Diocesan Commission for Justice and Peace (1989-1992), parish administrator of Sant'Elia, parish priest of the Madonna del Carmine in Catanzaro, director of the diocesan Office for Missionary Cooperation among Churches, and parish priest in Satriano (1992-1999). He later served as a collaborator at the Shrine of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Torre Ruggero, parish collaborator in Montepaone Lido and administrator of the parish of Santa Maria di Altavilla in Satriano.

Since 1992, he has been president of the Centro Calabrese di Solidarietà, a structure linked to Don Mario Picchi's Therapeutic Communities (FICT). From 2000 to 2006 he was vice-president of the Betania Foundation of the metropolitan archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace. From 2006 to 2015 he was national president of the Italian Federation of Therapeutic Communities.

He was elected as bishop of Cerreto Sannita-Telese-Sant’Agata de’ Goti on 24 June 2016, and consecrated on the following 3 September.

 

Appointment of auxiliary bishop of Tarnów, Poland

The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of Tarnów, Poland, the Reverend Can. Artur Ważny, of the clergy of the same diocese, until now director of the Office for the Permanent Formation of the Clergy, assigning him the titular see of Mazaca.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Artur Ważny was born on 12 October 1966 in Rzeszów, in the same diocese. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Tarnów, the diocese where he was subsequently ordained a priest on 25 May 1991.

Since priestly ordination he has served as vicar in the following parishes: Our Lady of Sorrows in Limanowa (1991-1995), and Mary Queen of Poland in Tarnów-Mościce (1995-1999).

He then studied at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warszawa, where he was awarded a licentiate in pastoral theology. In 1996 he was appointed as director of the diocesan Office for Youth Pastoral Care and in 2003 he become director of the diocesan Office for University Pastoral Care.

From 2007 to 2014 he served as parish priest of Mary Queen of Poland in Tarnów-Mościce and from 2014 to 2019, director of the diocesan Office for New Evangelisation. On 14 September 2010 he was granted the ministry of exorcist. On 25 December 2017 he was appointed as canon of the Collegial Chapter of Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist in Mielac.

From 2019 to the present he has served as director of the Office for the Permanent Formation of the Clergy and diocesan spiritual father.
