Il 27 maggio 2007, Solennità di Pentecoste, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI inviò una Lettera ai Vescovi, ai presbiteri, alle persone consacrate e ai fedeli laici della Chiesa cattolica nella Repubblica Popolare Cinese.
"Con questa Lettera" il Santo Padre intende "offrire alcuni orientamenti in merito alla vita della Chiesa e all’opera di evangelizzazione in Cina", per aiutare i cattolici cinesi a scoprire ciò che da loro vuole il Signore e Maestro, Gesù Cristo, «la chiave, il centro e il fine di tutta la storia umana» (n. 2).
L’utilità della suddetta Lettera è confermata dalla grande e favorevole accoglienza che è stata ad essa riservata da parte dei cattolici cinesi che hanno potuto conoscerla. Dalle informazioni, che giungono dalla Cina, risulta che il Documento pontificio ha dato origine non soltanto a incontri di studio per approfondire il contenuto ma anche a molte iniziative di carattere pastorale: esso sta diventando un sicuro punto di riferimento per la soluzione dei vari problemi che la comunità cattolica si trova ad affrontare sul piano sia dottrinale sia pratico e disciplinare.
Nel secondo anniversario della pubblicazione della Lettera pontificia, la Santa Sede offre alla Chiesa in Cina un "Compendio", che, secondo il genere letterario catechistico di domande e risposte, ripresenta gli elementi fondamentali, espressi da Benedetto XVI.
Il "Compendio" ripropone fedelmente, nella struttura e nel linguaggio, i contenuti della suddetta Lettera, riportando ampi estratti del suo testo. Esso, con l’aggiunta di alcune note a piè di pagina e di due brevi Appendici, si presenta come un autorevole strumento che può favorire una conoscenza più approfondita del pensiero di Sua Santità su alcuni punti particolarmente delicati.
Il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha approvato il "Compendio" e ne ha autorizzato la pubblicazione come documento della Sede Apostolica.
Il documento sarà disponibile nel sito web ufficiale della Santa Sede, nelle lingue cinese (caratteri semplificati e tradizionali) e inglese, a partire dal 24 maggio corrente.

On 27 May 2007, the Solemnity of Pentecost, the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI sent a Letter to the Bishops, priests, consecrated persons and lay faithful of the Catholic Church in the People’s Republic of China.
"Through this Letter", the Holy Father intends "to offer some guidelines concerning the life of the Church and the task of evangelization in China", in order to help Chinese Catholics discover what the Lord and Master, Jesus Christ, "the key, the centre and the purpose of the whole of human history", wants from them (No. 2).
The usefulness of the Letter has been confirmed by the highly favourable reception given to it by the Chinese Catholics who had access to it. From the information that is arriving from China, it is clear that the Papal Document has given rise not only to study sessions exploring its content but also to many pastoral initiatives: it is becoming a reliable point of reference for the resolution of the various problems that the Catholic community is having to address on both the doctrinal level and the practical, disciplinary level.
On the second anniversary of the publication of the Papal Letter, the Holy See is offering the Church in China a "Compendium" which, following the catechetical literary genre of questions and answers, presents once again the basic elements expressed by Pope Benedict XVI.
The "Compendium" faithfully reproduces, both in structure and language, the content of the original Letter, quoting extended passages from it. With the addition of some footnotes and two short Appendices, the "Compendium" is presented as an authoritative tool facilitating a deeper understanding of His Holiness’ thought on some particularly delicate points.
The Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has approved the "Compendium" and has authorized its publication as a document of the Apostolic See.
The document will be available on the official website of the Holy See in Chinese (using simplified and traditional characters) and English, from 24 May 2009.

二OO七年五月二十七日圣神降临瞻礼那天，教宗本笃十六世发表了一封《致在中华人民共和国的天主教会的主教、司铎、度奉献生活者及教友的信》。
通过「这封信」，教宗旨在「就在中国的教会的生活和福传事业提出一些指导」，从而帮助中国天主教徒发现主和导师、「人类整个历史的钥匙、中心和终向」（第2号）——耶稣基督对他们的要求。
得以认识了解这封信的中国天主教徒们热烈而支持的接纳，充分验证了这封信的有效作用。来自中国的消息表明，教宗的文件不仅促生了各种指向深化其内容的研讨会，还推动了许多牧灵活动：这封信正在成为解决天主教会团体所面临的教义、实施和纪律方面等各种问题的可靠参照。
值此教宗信发表两周年纪念之际，圣座为在中国的教会提供一部《纲要》。这《纲要》依照天主教要理问答的体裁，重申教宗本笃十六世所阐述的基本要素。
在结构和语式上，这《纲要》忠实地再现了教宗信的内容，广泛予以摘录引用。加之新增的部分注脚及两份简短附录，这份《纲要》成为权威工具，有助于更深入认识教宗在一些极其复杂点上所表达的思想。
教宗本笃十六世批准了这《纲要》；并授权以宗座文件形式出版。
自五月二十四日起，这文件将以中文（简体和繁体）及英文正式刊登在圣座官方网站上。
