Questa mattina il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza la Delegazione della Comunità Sikh degli Emirati Arabi Uniti e ha rivolto loro il discorso che riportiamo di seguito:
Discorso del Santo Padre
Vi saluto con gioia, cari amici Sikh, che vi siete radunati qui da diversi Paesi su iniziativa del Guru Nanak Darbar, di Dubai. Mi ha fatto molto piacere apprendere del servizio ispirato alla fede da voi offerto in Paesi che, pur lontani dalle vostre terre di origine, sono diventati casa vostra. Tale sforzo testimonia il vostro impegno a vivere nella fede e a contribuire al bene della società, cercando di integrarvi e al tempo stesso di rimanere fedeli alla vostra specifica identità. Inoltre, costruendo ponti tra le persone, e specialmente servendo i poveri, i bisognosi e i sofferenti, voi riconoscete i vari modi in cui le vostre stesse vite sono state benedette ed arricchite.
Fede e servizio, come sapete, sono intimamente uniti. Infatti la via autentica per arrivare a Dio, come dice la vostra Sacra Scrittura Guru Granth Sahib, è nel servizio agli uomini nostri fratelli. Il Vangelo ci riporta questa parola di Gesù: «Ho avuto fame e mi avete dato da mangiare, ho avuto sete e mi avete dato da bere, ero straniero e mi avete accolto, nudo e mi avete vestito, malato e mi avete visitato, ero in carcere e siete venuti a trovarmi» (Mt 25,35-36). Il servizio disinteressato, reso particolarmente a chi tra noi è più piccolo e si trova alle periferie della società, oltre a renderci consapevoli della nostra piccolezza e insufficienza, ci avvicina a Dio. Possa dunque esso restare sempre il vostro stile di vita, e possiate voi essere una benedizione per tutti quelli che servite, promuovendo uno spirito di fraternità e di uguaglianza, di giustizia e di pace. Dio vi benedica tutti!

With joy I greet all of you, dear Sikhs friends, who have gathered here from various countries under the auspices of Guru Nanak Darbar, Dubai. I was pleased to learn about the faith-inspired service you offer to the communities in those countries that have become your home, far from your native land. Such efforts bear witness to your endeavour to live by faith and to contribute to the good of society, as you seek to integrate yourselves while at the same time remaining steadfast to your own specific identity. Moreover, by building bridges among people, and in a special way serving the poor, the needy and the suffering, you also acknowledge the ways in which your own lives have been greatly blessed and enriched.
Faith and service, as you are aware, are intimately linked. Indeed, the true path to God, as your Holy Scripture Guru Granth Sahib says, lies in the service of our fellow human beings. The Gospel brings us these words of Jesus: “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me” (Mt 25:35-36). Selfless service rendered in particular to the least in our midst, and to those on the peripheries of society, besides making us consciously aware of our own littleness and insufficiency, bring us closer to God. May service, then, always remain your way of life and may you be a blessing to all whom you serve in promoting the spirit of fraternity and equality, justice and peace! May God bless you all!
